“Should I get a website or an app?” It’s one of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is that most businesses need a website first, and only some need an app. Here’s how to tell which camp you’re in.

What a website is good for

A website is your shopfront on the internet. Anyone can find it on Google, open it in a browser, and see what you do, all without downloading anything. It’s the right choice when you want to:

  • Be found by new customers searching online
  • Show your services, prices and reviews
  • Take enquiries, bookings or online orders
  • Look professional and credible

For the vast majority of small businesses, a website is the priority. If you don’t have a good website yet, start there.

What an app is good for

An app lives on someone’s phone, behind an icon. People have to download it, which is a bigger ask, so an app only earns its place when people use it again and again. Apps shine when you want to:

  • Give regular users something they’ll come back to daily or weekly
  • Send push notifications
  • Work offline or use phone features like the camera or GPS
  • Build a genuinely app-like experience, not just a website in a wrapper

Think loyalty schemes, booking tools people use often, or a product like a companion app. If your customers would use it once and forget it, a website is cheaper and does the job.

A quick way to decide

Ask yourself: would people come back to this every week?

  • No: you want a website.
  • Yes: an app might be worth it, and often you’ll want both. The website brings people in, the app keeps them coming back.

What about cost?

A website is the more affordable starting point, from a few hundred pounds. Apps cost more because they’re built for iPhone and Android and go through the app stores. That said, they don’t have to cost a fortune. A good studio will shape your idea, price it honestly, and tell you if a website would serve you better.

Not sure? Just ask

We build both, in-house, and we’ll give you a straight answer, even if that answer is “you don’t need an app yet”. Our own app, MyUmrah, is a good example of when an app makes sense: people use it throughout their journey.

If you’re weighing it up, tell us what you’re trying to do and we’ll point you the right way.
